Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) for Eligibility to Seek Enrolment as an Advocate with Bar Council
The Honourable Supreme Court, through its Order dated March 6, 2018, has directed the restoration of the Law Graduate Assessment Test (Law-GAT) by the Pakistan Bar Council (PBC) through the Higher Education Commission (HEC). The objective is to ensure a proper scrutiny and evaluation of law graduates desiring to join the legal profession, allowing only competent individuals with necessary basic knowledge of law to enter the field. Therefore, a law graduate becomes eligible to apply to a Bar Council for enrolment as an Advocate only upon qualifying the Assessment Test.
Eligibility Criteria:
- Persons having passed Bachelor’s degree in Law or equivalent from a university recognized by HEC/PBC are eligible to apply.
Test Structure:
- The test will consist of Multiple-Choice Questions (MCQs).
- The Revised Curriculum of the Law-GAT Test can be downloaded from here.
Date of Test:
- The Law-GAT Test is tentatively scheduled for January 7, 2024.
- Any changes in the test date, due to unavoidable circumstances, will be communicated through www.hec.gov.pk and http://etc.hec.gov.pk.
Application Process:
- Applicants may select any test center from the available list during the online registration.
- The test will be held at a selected center if a minimum of 250 applicants choose that center.
- The selected test center cannot be changed after registration.
Online Registration:
- Visit http://etc.hec.gov.pk for online registration.
- For any difficulty during online registration, visit onlinehelp.hec.gov.pk or HEC Secretariat or NEC Regional Centers for guidance.
- Application submission comprises two steps: profile completion using “My Profile” section and application submission using “Law Graduate Assessment Test” link on the menu panel.
- Only SUBMITTED applications will be considered, and those in SAVE or INCOMPLETE mode will not be entertained.
Test Fee:
- The test fee of Rs. 3000/- is to be deposited via 1Bill Invoice participating Banks/ATM/Internet Banking/Mobile Banking/Easypaisa/JazzCash/Upaisa.
- Verify online payment on the ETC Dashboard after depositing the fee.
- The test fee is non-refundable and non-transferable.
Important Dates:
- Last date for online registration: December 25, 2023 (4 pm).
Other Requirements/Conditions:
- A 50% score is required to pass the Law-GAT.
- Applicants will have a maximum of seven chances to clear the test, which HEC will conduct on a quarterly basis.
- Applicants must meet any additional criteria as per the Rules and Regulations of the Pakistan Bar Council.
